Campus money offices ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Colleges have real people whose job is to help you afford it. Here's who they are โ€” and exactly what to say.

The secret most students never learn: money help on campus is spread across several offices, and a lot of it is given out only to students who ask. Asking is normal and expected โ€” not begging.

Who does what

๐Ÿ’ฐ Financial-Aid Office โ€” your grants, loans, work-study, and your overall aid package. Start here for almost everything.

๐Ÿงพ Bursar / Student Accounts Office โ€” your actual bill and payment plans. Ask them to spread payments out instead of paying all at once.

๐Ÿ… Scholarship Office โ€” the college's own scholarships (often separate from aid). Ask what's still open, even mid-year.

๐ŸŽ Basic-Needs Office โ€” food pantry, emergency grants, housing help, sometimes bus passes. Many campuses have one now.

๐Ÿงญ Career Center โ€” paid internships, work-study jobs, and fields with loan forgiveness.

๐Ÿ“š Academic Adviser โ€” keeps you on track to graduate on time (finishing faster saves real money).

๐ŸŽ“ TRIO / Student Support Services โ€” free, powerful support for first-generation, limited-income, and disabled students: advising, tutoring, sometimes extra grant aid. If you qualify, join early.

Scripts you can copy (say these out loud or by email)

"Can you review my financial-aid package with me? I want to understand what's a grant versus a loan."
"Are there any emergency grants or completion grants if I get stuck on a bill?"
"What institutional scholarships can I still apply for this year?"
"Can I set up a payment plan instead of paying the balance all at once?"
"Can you connect me with a financial-aid counselor โ€” I'm a first-gen / independent student and want to make sure I'm getting everything I qualify for."
"I had a change in my family's income / lost support. Can I file an appeal or a 'special circumstances' review?"
Pro move: a "special circumstances" or "professional judgment" appeal lets the aid office reconsider your aid if your situation changed (a parent lost a job, you became independent, a death in the family). Ask for it by name.
