🚫 The FAFSA and federal aid are always free. If someone asks for a fee to "apply," stop.

Application & grant help ✍️

Real, free help exists for every part of this — and none of it should ever cost you a fee.

Free FAFSA help

Counselors, aid offices & TRIO

Scholarship essay & application workshops

Legitimate grant-writing help (a different thing)

"Grant writing" usually means writing proposals for organizations to get funding — that's different from applying for your student financial aid. If a program offers free grant-writing workshops (for a community project, nonprofit, or research), great. But you should never need to hire a paid "grant writer" to get your student aid — that's done free through the FAFSA and your college.

🚨 How to spot aid & scholarship fraud

Walk away if you see any of these:

Report scholarship and student-aid scams to the FTC, and report student-aid fraud to the Dept. of Education OIG hotline. When unsure, ask your school counselor or the college aid office — free, and honest.

Remember: the most valuable help — counselors, aid offices, TRIO, FAFSA support — is completely free. You never have to pay to get money for college.
