Loans, forgiveness & careers 🎯
Borrow smart, know your options, and — this is powerful — pick a path where your work can help repay it.
Free money first. Loans are the last resort, after grants, scholarships, and work-study. If you must borrow, borrow only what you truly need.
Federal vs. private loans (in plain English)
- Federal student loans (from the government, via the FAFSA) usually have fixed interest, income-based payment options, and access to forgiveness programs. Almost always the safer choice.
- Private loans (from banks/lenders) can have higher or variable rates, fewer protections, and no access to federal forgiveness. Read the fine print; consider them only after federal options.

Repayment & forgiveness paths (official sources only)
Honest truth: forgiveness depends on your loan type, your job, your payment history, and current program rules — which change. No job "guarantees" forgiveness. Confirm everything at studentaid.gov and keep records.
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) — forgives remaining federal Direct Loan balance after 120 qualifying payments while working full-time for government or a nonprofit: PSLF details.
- Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) — caps monthly payments based on income, with forgiveness after a set period: IDR plans.
- Teacher Loan Forgiveness — for teaching 5 full years in a low-income school in certain subjects: Teacher forgiveness.
- Military service options and benefits: military & student loans.
- AmeriCorps education award — serve, then get money toward college or loans: Segal AmeriCorps Award.
- School-related discharge (closed school, borrower defense, disability): forgiveness & discharge overview.
Careers where your work can help repay (choose with eyes open)
Some fields have verified repayment or service programs. This can help you pick a major with the future in mind — but always confirm current program rules; nothing here guarantees repayment.
- Public service & government — often PSLF-eligible employers.
- Teaching — Teacher Loan Forgiveness + PSLF at public schools; some states add programs.
- Healthcare in shortage areas — the NHSC Loan Repayment Program repays loans for clinicians in underserved areas; the Nurse Corps does the same for nurses.
- Nonprofit work — PSLF-eligible.
- Military — service-connected education benefits and loan options.
- Rural / underserved service — several state and federal repayment programs exist for teachers, health workers, and lawyers.
